  • Discover the magic of nature with this fine art print featuring 𝘔𝘦𝘤𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴. 🪲✨
This piece has been a long time in the making — a tribute to a beetle I personally raised from egg to adult, whose life inspired every line and layer of colour in this illustration.

From its early days as a tiny egg, through months as a growing larva, its transformation inside a soil cocoon, and finally its short but brilliant adult life… this beetle’s entire journey unfolded in my care. It even produced offspring that are now nearly fully grown — a rare privilege to witness.

When its life came to an end, I preserved it through careful spreading and pinning, allowing its story to live on both as a specimen and now as this artwork. This illustration is more than a study — it’s a deeply personal record of transformation, patience, and wonder.

Perfect for lovers of nature, entomology, and meaningful art, this print brings an elegant, naturalist presence to any home or workspace.

Giclée prints with archival inks on 210g, 100% cotton paper. Two sizes available:
🌿 21x30cm (8.3” x 11.7”)
🌿 15x20cm (5.9” x 7.9”)
Available on my Etsy store — ʟɪɴᴋ ɪɴ ʙɪᴏ ᴏʀ ᴅᴍ

Original artwork 21x30cm on Fabriano Artistico 300g paper, created using Polychromos coloured pencils. DM if you’re interested in the original.

This artwork was created using a specimen from my own sustainably sourced collection — a beetle whose full life cycle I had the privilege to witness, making this piece truly one of a kind.

For every print sold, a tree will be planted in association with @treenation. 🌱

  • Meet the artist Behind Beetle and Leaf

Hi everyone, and welcome to all my new followers! Thought it was time you got to know a little more about the person behind all the bug art: I’m Grant Menzies, A Scottish born artist living in Sweden 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤍🇸🇪

I’ve been drawing since I could hold a crayon (probably ate a few back then too), mostly inspired by nature, flora and fauna. But trips to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh ignited a lifelong fascination with insects, especially for beetles! 🪲

After studying art in high school and illustration in college, life took a different path for a while. In 2023 I found my way back to drawing, and that’s when Coleoptera.art began — growing into what is Beetle and Leaf today. 🌱

My medium of choice? Coloured pencils, all the way. I love the detail and the challenge of creating photorealistic art. Seeing those tiny details come to life is pure magic. ✨

Fun fact: I actually collect my own insect specimens (mostly beetles, of course) to use as inspiration and reference for my drawings.

When I’m not covered in pencil dust I work in commercial property management as a digital marketer, chill in front of my aquarium at home (been a fish-keeper most of my life), or I’m out on the golf course making some divots and hopefully a few pars!

Oh, and did I forget? I also published a children’s book a few years back, with another one in the works! Check it out here @conniebooks

And yes. I love the band Teenage Fanclub! (But I’m actually more of a metal lover) 🎶🎸🤘

So, that’s me (in short)!
Thanks for following along on my artistic journey. What are you curious about? I’d love to hear in the comments.

  • Starting a new illustration, and yes… the paper had to get bigger.

This male and female Goliathus goliatus intermedius/quadrimaculatus remain the most impressive beetles in my collection. Holding them in my hands, you really feel their presence and sheer size. The male stretches past 9 cm from head to abdomen, and the female isn’t far behind. They’re true giants of the beetle world.

These vintage specimens were collected over 60 years ago and have held up beautifully through time. They were among the first additions to my Goliath collection, and they continue to inspire me.

I’m now embarking on a new illustration project; larger in both subject and scale. For the first time, I’m working on a much bigger format, letting the impressive size of these beetles shape the composition. I’ll still be using my trusted Polychromos pencils and fineliners, but this time the paper will have room for every ridge, plate, and texture these giants deserve.

Thanks again to @carim_nahaboo for these extraordinary specimens.

  • Thirty-one butterflies and moths, each one a small study in evolution’s design — symmetry, structure, and light.

This #Inktober has been a quiet journey across continents and colours, from the forests of Borneo to the plains of Africa.

  • #Inktober Day 31: 𝘑𝘶𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘢 — Madagascan Blue Pansy

To close this year’s Inktober, I’ve illustrated Junonia rhadama, the Madagascan Blue Pansy — a vibrant species whose rich blue upper wings contrast with velvety black borders and bright orange eyespots.

Native to Madagascar and nearby islands, it thrives in open, sunlit spaces, often basking with wings fully spread to absorb warmth. The eyespots act as decoys, diverting predators away from vital areas — a clever adaptation wrapped in bold colour and symmetry. A fitting finale to this month’s journey through the world’s Lepidoptera, ending in brilliance and balance.

  • #Inktober Day 30: 𝘗𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴

𝘗𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 is a day-flying moth from Indonesia — a subtle yet fascinating representative of the Zygaenidae family. Though its form resembles that of a butterfly, it is indeed a moth, perfectly adapted to daylight activity.

Discover the magic of nature with this fine art print featuring 𝘔𝘦𝘤𝘺𝘯𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘪𝘮𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴.

Meet the artist Behind Beetle and Leaf Hi everyone, and welcome to all my new followers! Thought it was time you got to know a little more about the person behind all the bug art: I’m Grant Menzies, A Scottish born artist living in Sweden 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤍🇸🇪 I’ve been drawing since I could hold a crayon (probably ate a few back then too), mostly inspired by nature, flora and fauna. But trips to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh ignited a lifelong fascination with insects, especially for beetles! 🪲 After studying art in high school and illustration in college, life took a different path for a while. In 2023 I found my way back to drawing, and that’s when Coleoptera.art began — growing into what is Beetle and Leaf today. 🌱 My medium of choice? Coloured pencils, all the way. I love the detail and the challenge of creating photorealistic art. Seeing those tiny details come to life is pure magic. ✨ Fun fact: I actually collect my own insect specimens (mostly beetles, of course) to use as inspiration and reference for my drawings. Check it out here @conniebooks And yes. I love the band Teenage Fanclub! (But I’m actually more of a metal lover) 🎶🎸🤘 So, that’s me (in short)! Thanks for following along on my artistic journey. What are you curious about? I’d love to hear in the comments. . . . . . . . 𝗪𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱-𝘁𝗵𝗲-𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁? 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗯𝗼𝘅 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿. Starting a new illustration, and yes… the paper had to get bigger. #GoliathBeetle #InsectArt #Coleoptera #NaturalHistoryArt #ArtOfNature #ColoredPencilArt #ArtistAtWork #DrawingInProgress #ArtCollectors #InsectLovers #BigInsects #IllustrationArtist #NatureInspiredArt

Summer memories ☀️
Looking back at moments from warmer days — adventures, nature, and sunlight that seemed to last forever.
I’m definitely not a winter person, and right now I’m longing for those bright, warm days to return…

Do you miss summer as much as I do?

My first Mecynorhinna torquata ugandensis has emerged — a stunning female with deep earthy red tones and a velvety sheen. I’ve raised her from a tiny larva over the past year, and seeing her as a fully grown adult is pure joy. #MecynorhinnaTorquataUgandensis #MTU #BeetleBreeding #Coleoptera #BeetleLife #InsectCollector #BeetleRaising #BeetleAndLeaf #EntomologyArt #NatureInDetail

Thirty-one butterflies and moths, each one a small study in evolution’s design — symmetry, structure, and light. This #Inktober has been a quiet journey across continents and colours, from the forests of Borneo to the plains of Africa. #Inktober Day 31: 𝘑𝘶𝘯𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘳𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘢 — Madagascan Blue Pansy

#Inktober Day 30: 𝘗𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴

𝘗𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 is a day-flying moth from Indonesia — a subtle yet fascinating representative of the Zygaenidae family. Though its form resembles that of a butterfly, it is indeed a moth, perfectly adapted to daylight activity.
